A Small Room, A Real Conversation


On April 30th, we hosted our East GTA Wellness & Fitness Studio Owners Roundtable at Spark Centre in Oshawa.

It was intentionally small. It was deeply honest. And it was exactly the kind of conversation we built this series for.

No panels. No pitches. Just operators talking about what it actually takes to retain members, build community, and grow a studio in 2026.


This isn't a stage — it's a table. The format is built around real, two-way dialogue.


We came in with a retention playbook — patterns and early-warning signals we've seen separate studios with strong retention from ones that quietly leak members.

But the moment we started walking through it, the conversation shifted — and that's exactly what we hoped would happen.

Operators began sharing their own playbooks: how they onboard a new member, the small touchpoints that make people feel seen, what they've tried, and what they'd do differently.

The best practices in the room didn't come from a slide. They came from each other.


What Stayed With Us


  • Retention is built in the first visit. Not at the cancellation form. The studios doing this well aren't doing more — they're doing the same things, more consistently.

  • Consistency comes from a person, not a policy. One practical idea from the room: assign each member to a specific operator or front-desk lead as their long-term point of contact. Members feel known. The relationship survives shift changes and growth.

  • Listen on a cadence — then act on it. Asking members what they want is only useful if there's a rhythm to hear it and a habit of acting on it. The best operators treat this as an ongoing loop, not a once-a-year survey.

  • Being a solo operator is isolating. Most don't have a peer to call when something is going wrong. People weren't just sharing wins — they were comparing notes on the hard parts.

  • Community is the product. A boutique studio isn't selling square footage. It's selling belonging.

  • Community lives outside the studio walls, too. Some of the strongest community-building ideas in the room happened outside the studio — outdoor gatherings, partnerships with complementary wellness and fitness brands, and showing up at events aligned with your members' demographic and interests. Done well, it deepens retention and opens a new revenue stream — as long as everything stays in alignment with the studio's mission.
